What Is Corn Leather? The Sustainable Revolution in Footwear

Corn leather — also known as Corn Tex or bio-based leather — is a plant-based material made from the by-products of corn processing. It represents one of the most promising innovations in sustainable fashion, offering an alternative to both animal leather and petroleum-based synthetic materials.

How Is It Made?

The process begins with the residue left after corn kernels are processed for food production — typically corn stalks, cobs and husks. These fibrous by-products are processed into a biopolymer that is then bonded with a textile backing to create a supple, durable sheet material. The result looks and feels remarkably similar to traditional leather.

Why Did Le Orsine Choose It?

We've always believed that quality and sustainability don't have to be opposites. Corn leather allowed us to offer a vegan alternative to our iconic Friulane without compromising the softness, durability or craftsmanship that define our shoes. It's also biodegradable and produced with significantly lower carbon emissions than animal leather.

Performance and Durability

Corn leather is breathable, water-resistant and flexible — properties that make it particularly well-suited for footwear. With proper care, a pair of corn leather Friulane will last just as long as their traditional leather counterparts.

The Bigger Picture

Choosing plant-based materials is one part of a broader commitment to a more responsible fashion industry. Corn leather is just one of many bio-based alternatives — alongside Piñatex (pineapple fiber), mushroom leather and apple skin leather — that are reshaping what sustainable luxury can look like.
